- In his first speech from Downing Street, Mr Burnham pledged to bring "life's essentials back under stronger public control" to make them more affordable and committed to ending rough sleeping.
- Deputy prime minister David Lammy and housing secretary Steve Reed were among the first senior ministers to resign as Mr Burnham begins to assemble his new cabinet.
