Israel accused of breaking ceasefire after missile strikes kill 17 in Lebanon
- Israeli strikes on Lebanon on Thursday resulted in 17 fatalities, including two children, and injured 35 people, despite a ceasefire agreement negotiated two weeks prior.
- The ceasefire, agreed in Washington on 16 April and extended by US president Donald Trump, has reportedly been violated multiple times by Israel, according to Lebanon's army and accusations from France.
- Israel states its actions target Hezbollah infrastructure and has issued evacuation warnings for 15 southern Lebanese villages, while also planning to occupy a 10km buffer zone along the border.
- Lebanese president Joseph Aoun urged international pressure on Israel to respect international laws and cease targeting civilians, paramedics, and humanitarian organisations, a sentiment echoed by French President Emmanuel Macron who condemned earlier "indiscriminate strikes."
- The conflict has led to over 2,500 deaths in Lebanon since 2 March, with a particularly deadly incident on 8 April, dubbed "Black Wednesday," where over 350 people were killed in rapid, unwarned attacks.
